{From My Commonplace}

"Hypocrisy in anything whatever may deceive the cleverest and most penetrating man, but the least wide-awake of children recognizes it, and is revolted by it, however ingeniously it may be disguised."

from Tolstoy's Anna Karenina

I'm reading this one on my tablet after too many attempts at juggling a tome and a baby at once. ;) And I'm using Amber's method of highlighting via the Kindle app, then going in every so often to view my highlighted quotes on the Notes page and add the most pertinent of them to my commonplace.  It's a great system!

  1. I am enjoying this book immensely - it is full of meaningful passages and his character development is so good! Ahhh, I'm going to want to read War and Peace once I am finished!

  2. Striking quote. I wonder if the hypocrisy is picked up almost subconsciously - I don't remember ever thinking, ' What a hypocrite' but was acutely aware of the 'Do as I say, not as I do' attitude. Then sometimes children (maybe this is truer of older children) are very idealistic and don't see things that an older person might. Interesting. haven't read AK yet but it's been waiting for me on the shelf for ages.

  3. A very powerful quote, Celeste... maybe stepping on my toes a bit. I should have worn my son's steel-toes boots before I visited you today. ;)
