Nature Study Outing - Week 19

Despite a very cloudy morning, the rain held off for us and we got to explore a local pedestrian/cycling trail winding along the main creek in the area.  They recently put in a new visitor center/ranger station with a covered picnic area, which should serve as a great space for us to meet on rainy or very hot days.  It was actually really lovely out, overcast and mild.  We first took a long walk down the trail, stopping to watch the creek from the bridge and from the banks.

Then on through the trees: lots of oaks, sycamores, and locusts.  I have to admit that I have never seen so many woodpecker holes!

Very fun to show the children, who hadn't seen anything like it either.  There were plenty of moss and mushrooms...

And plenty of room to run!

We spent a bit of time afterward checking out the small collection of pelts at the visitor's center, chatting with the docent and ranger, and then drawing in our journals.

Big kids and little kids alike. :)
