{From My Commonplace}

"And his father seemed ever so much better from finding that his boy was already not only useful to his family but useful to other people, and quite taking his place as a man who judged what was wise and did work worth doing."

from George MacDonald's At the Back of the North Wind

  1. Your quote captures what I really desire for each of my children - that others would be blessed by them. It's easy to enjoy our own children; they're so much a part of who we are but that enjoyment doesn't always extend to others. Reminds me also of CM's comment 'How much do they care?'

    1. Oh, me too, Carol. Absolutely. And I think MacDonald's variety of "usefulness" is so far from the whole utilitarian idea of usefulness. Like you said, it's that ability to bless others, help others, serve others bring others joy. Young Diamond is a wonderful example of CM's "how much do they care?"

  2. Work worth doing is a worthy goal, makes things rather clear.

    Thank you for sharing not only the quote but the pretty handwriting too!

  3. Judging and working fits beautifully into that Wisdom and Eloquence paradigm, yes? Thanks for joining last week!
